Google has declared investment in Taiwan’s New Green Power (NGP) with an option of buying as much as 300MW of renewable energy from the firm that is owned by BlackRock fund. This makes sense as Google continues to strive to cut its and its suppliers’ greenhouse gas emissions. Due to the growing awareness among investors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to a company’s activities and supply chains, Big Tech such as Google has incorporated sustainability goals.
The company has set ambitious sustainability goals for itself on going carbon-free energy in all their facilities. Nonetheless, as the information-processing capability has increased, primarily due to the development of artificial intelligence, the level of emissions has also grown. For example, 85% of power generation in Taiwan is based on the combustion of fossil fuels, where Google currently has applied significant Cloud Technology, including local data centers and company workplaces; this was uncovered by Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s Worldwide Head of Information Center Vitality, talking to Reuters news.
Corio clearly stated that this is a long-term investment for developing a big pipeline of solar energy project in Taiwan. Due to relatively fewer structures and regulations in the Asia Pacific region that allows direct green power procurement by the corporate users, the region presents distinctive decarbonization challenges.

A versatile solar power firm the BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure business controls Not Just Plastic, or NGP, is based in Taiwan. While, (David Giordano, BlackRock’s Global Head of Climate Infrastructure) has pointed out that the exact quantum of the equity holding has not been revealed and it is said that Google has invested about $1 billion which would make it the largest equity investor in NGP, though these figures are yet to be confirmed. However, Corio said this investment will unlock equity and debt funding needed for the implementation of NGP’s 1 GW solar projects plan.
Taiwan’s goal is to reach 20 GW of solar by 2025 with ambitious plans that embody the layout of 80MW solar energy by the year 2050. Under this regard, Google plans to incorporate some of the solar power it buys to support own firm operations. Also, Google plans to provide extended access of this renewable energy source to the suppliers and manufacturers in the region. In this respect, Google looks for to accomplish a diminish in the degree of Scope 3 emanations which alludes to the nursery outflows that emerge from the company’s esteem chain.
This investment does not only show Google’s concern to accurate sustainable energy practice ,but also reflects the another general movements in which the corporations are increasingly using renewable energy in their production. Thus, sponsoring NGP and contributing to Taiwan’s renewable power development objectives, Google becomes a well-performing and proactive participant in the worldwide fight against climate change and for environmental sustainability.
