Google unveils Gemini AI app in India with Nine Indian Languages

Google has released its dedicated AI mobile application, known as Gemini, in India, over four months later its initial debut in the U.S. The app supports nine Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, in addition to English. This allows users in India to chat with the AI by typing or even speaking in any of these languages, as confirmed by Google on Tuesday.

Google confirmed that the current Gemini mobile app popular in India is backed by Gemini 1.0 Pro by default. But, the users have an option to upgrade to paid version where they can experience Gemini Advanced, which is based on Gemini 1.5 Pro. This advanced version can operate within a context window of up to one million tokens, which makes it capable to process various information types, from 1,500 pages long documents to complex data analysis tasks. The advanced version also comes the nine Indian languages present in the standard app.

Along with India, Google has launched the Gemini mobile app in Turkey and has also introduced the app in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in a stealth manner. Users of Android in these countries can download the application from play store and select Gemini as the default AI helper in the Google assistant application. In the next several weeks, iPhone users in India will also be able to access Gemini through Google app.

At the I/O developers conference in May, Google expanded Gemini AI from the Assistant application beyond into other services like Gmail, Google Messages and YouTube along with a deeper integration into Android. Some of these features will be gradually deployed to the supported devices over the next few months. On the same note, Google has also integrated Gemini into Google Messages in English for users in India.

The Gemini mobile application was initially introduced in the U. S. in February. By April, it had extended its services to European countries like Germany, France, Italy, Sweden and the United Kingdom. They also notched up support for more languages like Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese, making it accessible to many people from around the world.

The release of the Gemini app in India also made a big leap for Google and shows the company’s intent to ensure its AI tools are useful to a wide population. Through the seemingly simple action of enabling multiple Indian languages, Google wants to cater to the language diversity of India therefore improving the user experience. Features like the token context window shown in the paid version of the app show how Google is aiming to develop its tools as powerful AI systems capable of dealing with demanding tasks and significant volumes of data.
